Ginninderra East

The Suburban Land Agency (SLA) is shaping the future of Ginninderra East, an exciting new neighbourhood set to grow in a well-connected part of Belconnen.

The Future Community of Ginninderra East

The ACT Government has acquired Ginninderra East, part of the former CSIRO Ginninderra Research Station. The site spans approximately 240 hectares and has the potential to deliver up to 3,000 new homes, subject to planning approvals.

Ginninderra East will become a new community in Belconnen, contributing to the ACT Government’s target of enabling 30,000 new homes by 2030 and supporting greater housing choice in the region.

Future development will respect and integrate the site’s environmental and cultural values, with green spaces and open areas designed to connect people with the natural landscape. The vision is for a well-connected neighbourhood that supports a high quality of life, with opportunities for living, working, learning and recreation.

Community and Stakeholder Engagement

Following the acquisition, the Canberra community will be invited to participate in consultation activities to inform the Major Plan Amendment and subdivision design stages of the proposed development. This process is set to commence later in the year.

Community members, developers and other interested parties are encouraged to subscribe to SLA's mailing list by selecting the "Stay connected: News, events and education" preference to receive ongoing project updates as progress continues.

Ginninderra East Major Plan Amendment to the Territory Plan

In order to develop the site for housing, SLA will undertake a Major Plan Amendment (MPA) to the Territory Plan.

The MPA to the Territory Plan will be progressed through the Territory Planning Authority (TPA) to rezone the land from NUZ3 Hills, Ridges and Buffer Areas to a mix of zones allowable under the Territory Plan. The proposal will open for public consultation with further details made available on the Planning website.

The proposed development will provide a diverse range of housing choice options including apartments, townhouses and smaller residential dwellings in an established, well-connected area. This new neighbourhood will create more homes close to existing shops, schools and public transport in nearby suburbs such as Evatt, Spence and Giralang, while also bringing new commercial and community facilities to the area.

To learn more about the process, visit the Major Plan amendments page on the Planning website.
